War and drought have crippled Kandahar and devastated the
agricultural
economy. Most farmers are caught in grinding poverty, which
in turn
causes great stress on rural communities.
The Canadian project, commissioned by CIDA, is energizing
rural
communities with fast-track, intense and progressive development.
Since last summer, the project:
- has reached 60,000 Kandahari
- transformed some 2,500 ha of desert to farmland
- significantly reduce communicable disease through sanitation
- built 80km of irrigation canals (in three weeks)
- is building markets, pharmacies, bakeries & metal
shops
- repaired or improved schools & clinics
- provided farmers access to tractors & other machinery
- engaged 2,000 impoverished villagers in short term work
Agency trainers are presently upgrading the sewing skills
of 120 women to help establish
a garment and apparel industry in Kandahar.

Here 500 farmers dig a mile of canal
a day, building the future with their own hand.
